An Evaluation of the Usability of a Computerized Decision Support System for Nursing Homes

2011

SummaryBackground: Computerized decision support systems (CDSSs) have the potential to significantly improve the quality of nursing care of older people by enhancing the decision making of nursing personnel. Despite this potential, health care organizations have been slow to incorporate CDSSs into nursing home practices. Objective: This study describes facilitators and barriers that impact the ability of nursing personnel to effectively use a clinical CDSS for planning and treating pressure ulcers (PUs) and malnutrition and for following the suggested risk assessment guidelines for the care of nursing home residents. Methods: We employed a qualitative descriptive design using varied methods, …

Incidence of potential drug interactions in a transplant centre setting and relevance of electronic alerts for clinical practice support

2013

Background Adverse drug events may occur as a result of drug–drug interactions (DDIs). Information technology (IT) systems can be an important decision-making tool for healthcare workers to identify DDIs.Objective The aim of the study is to analyse drug prescriptions in our main hospital units, in order to measure the incidence and severity of potential DDIs. The utility of clinical decision-support systems (CDSSs) and computerised physician order entry (CPOE) in term of alerts adherence was also assessed. DDIs were assessed using a Micromedex healthcare series database. Methods The system, adopted by the hospital, generates alerts for prescriptions with negative interactions and thanks to a…

Randomized pilot study and qualitative evaluation of a clinical decision support system for brain tumour diagnosis based on SV 1H MRS: Evaluation as …

2014

The results of a randomized pilot study and qualitative evaluation of the clinical decision support system Curiam BT are reported. We evaluated the system's feasibility and potential value as a radiological information procedure complementary to magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to assist novice radiologists in diagnosing brain tumours using MR spectroscopy (1.5 and 3.0T). Fifty-five cases were analysed at three hospitals according to four non-exclusive diagnostic questions. Our results show that Curiam BT improved the diagnostic accuracy in all the four questions. Additionally, we discuss the findings of the users' feedback about the system, and the further work to optimize it for real envir…

Overvåking av vitale parametere i sykehus : En sammenligning av manuelle og elektroniske overvåkingssystemer

2018

Masteroppgave i helse- og sosialinformatikk HSI500 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 Adverse events can be avoided by timely recognition of derangements in vital signs. Sørlandet Hospital HF (SSHF) has implemented an Early Warning Score System named "TILT"; 2Early identification of life-threatening conditions”. In 2017 SSHF started a project that tested wireless sensors for continuous monitoring of vital signs on wards. Patients were monitored by sensors and vital signs were also measured by traditional means during the project period. The aim of this study was to examine compliance with the vital signs monitoring protocol, and to examine the benefits of an electronic system. The following quest…

Clinical Decision Support System To Prevent Toxicity In Patients Treated With Digoxin

2011

In this chapter, authors develop a system for prevention and detection of congestive heart failure and fibrillation. Due to its narrow therapeutic range more than 10% of the patients treated with DGX can suffer toxic effects, but it is estimated that half of the cases of digitalis toxicity could be prevented. Two multivariate models were developed to prevent digitalis toxicity.

Are student nurses ready for new technologies in mental health? Mixed-methods study

2020

Abstract Background Technical innovations such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA), machine learning (ML), computerized adaptive testing (CAT), Digital Phenotyping, Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), Algorithms, and Biomarkers have caused a paradigm shift in psychiatric care. The aim of the present study was to explore how student nurses view this paradigm shift, by assessing the acceptability of smartphone-based EMA, CAT, and biosensor-based Digital Phenotyping. We also investigated the factors affecting this acceptability. Method Student nurses recruited via nursing schools participated in a quantitative study involving the screenplay method, in which they were exposed to two …

Psychiatrists' Attitudes Toward Disruptive New Technologies: Mixed-Methods Study

2018

Background Recent discoveries in the fields of machine learning (ML), Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), computerized adaptive testing (CAT), digital phenotype, imaging, and biomarkers have brought about a new paradigm shift in medicine. Objective The aim of this study was to explore psychiatrists’ perspectives on this paradigm through the prism of new clinical decision support systems (CDSSs). Our primary objective was to assess the acceptability of these new technologies. Our secondary objective was to characterize the factors affecting their acceptability. Methods A sample of psychiatrists was recruited through a mailing list. Respondents completed a Web-based survey. A quantitative…

HCI for biomedical decision-making: From diagnosis to therapy.

2020

Abstract Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) plays a fundamental role in the design of software oriented towards clinical decision-making tasks. Currently, physicians have to deal with an ensemble of systems and software tools in the clinical environment, such as clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs), Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACSs). Moreover, additional platforms aim at collaborative work particularly in telemedicine, where rehabilitation technologies and conversational agents can support the healthcare professionals.
